Pad Feeding Workshop
20 Students. Two Hours. One Often Overlooked Skill.
Yesterday we held our Pad Feeding Workshop at Empower Martial Arts Academy and I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended.
Around 20 students gave up two hours of their Sunday to work on something that is often overlooked, but is absolutely crucial to improving your martial arts.
Pad feeding.
Most people naturally focus on hitting pads. That's the fun part. But great training partners know how to hold pads well too.
Good pad feeding creates better timing, better accuracy, better power development and safer training. It helps both people improve faster.
During the workshop we started with the foundations.
We covered basic numbering systems, how to hold pads effectively, how to communicate clearly and how to feed safely and confidently.
One of the ways we approached it was through language.
First we learned the letters.
Jab.
Cross.
Hook.
Then we started building words.
Jab cross.
Cross hook.
Jab rear kick.
Once everyone understood the basics, we began building sentences by adding knees, kicks, defensive movements and evasions.
The goal wasn't just to memorise combinations or learn the numbering system. It was to understand how to construct them, communicate them clearly and feed them in a way that helps your partner get the most from their training.
As with most workshops, we quickly discovered that there was far more to cover than time allowed.
We only scratched the surface of what I had planned, which probably means a Part 2 is needed sooner rather than later.
Hopefully everyone took away at least one thing that will improve their training and help them become a better training partner.
I'd genuinely love to hear your feedback. What was useful? What would you like covered next time? What areas would you like us to go deeper on?
The whole point of these monthly workshops is to help everyone continue developing beyond regular classes, so your feedback helps shape what comes next.
Speaking of what's next...
Our next monthly workshop will focus on Bruce Lee's Five Methods of Attack.
We'll look at how these concepts can help improve timing, decision making, attacking strategy and overall understanding of combat.
We're currently looking at dates in July or early August.
There's a poll running in the Facebook group now, so if you'd like to attend, make sure you jump in and vote for the date that works best for you.
Thanks again to everyone who attended yesterday. Seeing a room full of people willing to spend a Sunday afternoon improving the details of their training is exactly what makes this academy special.
